Early in the 9th century, Vikings settled the island between the Rivers Shannon and Abbey. Their crude settlement eventually became today’s city of Limerick. In the 12th & 13th centuries the Normans left their mark with many fine buildings. Later high stonewalls were built that divided the city into Englishtown and Irishtown. In the 18th century the walls came down and a Georgian city of charm and elegance arose.

Limerick is the 3rd largest city in Ireland and capital of the Mid-Western region which embraces the counties of Limerick, Clare and Tipperary. Places to see include the 13th century Anglo-Norman King John’s Castle, the 13th century Gothic St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Hunt Museum with its art collection featuring Irish and European antiquities. Limerick was the setting of Frank McCourt’s well-known novel and film ‘Angela’s Ashes’ and a guided walking tour has been created in its honour.

To the north of Limerick and the Shannon Estuary is the village of Bunratty, dominated by the 15th century castle which has been authentically restored to its former medieval splendour. The Folk Park set on 26 acres recreates 19th century Ireland with a village street, farmhouses, a pub and much more. Famous medieval banquets are held nightly year-round in the castle.

Ennis, the county town of Clare, is a charming place situated on the banks of the River Fergus.  Narrow winding lanes are particularly characteristic and recall Ennis's medieval beginnings.  The town is renowned for its painted shopfronts and folk festivals, abounds in 'singing' pubs and traditional music shops.
