Galway Delight
2 Night City Stay Vacation
About Your Vacation
Galway is both the gateway to the Irish-speaking region of Connemara in the west and a lively university city. Under the Anglo-Normans, it flourished as a trading post. In 1396 it gained a Royal Charter and, for the next two centuries, was controlled by 14 merchant families, or ‘tribes’.
The city prospered under English influence, but this allegiance cost Galway dear when, in 1652, Cromwell’s forces wrecked havoc and it fell into decline. In recent years, as a developing centre for high-tech industry, the city’s profile has been revived.
The centre of the city lies on the banks of the River Corrib widening out as it reaches Galway Bay. Urban renewal has led to extensive restoration of the narrow, winding streets of this once-walled city. There are numerous things to see and do and its compact size and lay-out make it easy to explore on foot.
Eyre Square encloses a plaza and park lined with 19th century buildings and Quay Street is known for its spirited restaurants and pubs. West of the city is the seaside resort of Salthill with sandy beaches, a long seafront promenade (watch the sun go down o’er Galway Bay) and amusement arcades.
