Your Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Dublin (Thursday)

Today is leisurely as we all gather in our hotel in the Royal County of Meath just north of Dublin city. If you have purchased our Air & Land package you are transferred from the airport to the tour hotel. Enjoy a pre-dinner drink and an introduction to your travelling companions before an early dinner this evening. (D)

Day 2 Armagh & Omagh (Friday)

The town of Trim is first on our agenda this morning to view Trim Castle. We then head north, thru’ the rich pasturelands of the Boyne valley to Armagh. Two cathedrals, both called St. Patrick, sit on opposing hills of which the more visually striking is the Roman Catholic one. In the afternoon we visit the Ulster American Folk Park near Omagh, an outdoor museum of emigration in the 18th & 19th centuries. (B, D)

Day 3 Glenveagh & Derry (Saturday)

Our first stop this morning is at Glenveagh National Park where a castle has been strategically placed to offset the surrounding wild natural beauty. In the afternoon we visit Londonderry or Derry as most people call it. A local guide will tell the ‘Story of Derry’ on a walking tour of this historic walled city. (B, D)

Day 4 Yeats Country & Knock Shrine (Sunday)

Leaving Donegal we travel south to Belleek to visit the world famous porcelain factory. We then enter the romantic domain of W.B. Yeats via Drumcliffe and other sites in Sligo associated with the life of the poet. In the afternoon we spend some time at Ireland’s National Marian Shrine in Knock, the leading place of pilgrimage in the Emerald Isle, before arriving in Galway our home for the next two nights. (B, D)

Day 5 Connemara (Monday)

Connemara remains the wildest and the most romantic place in Ireland. We travel west along Galway Bay via Spiddal and Rossaveal with the Aran Islands to view only a few miles offshore, through Maam Cross and across the Maamturk mountains to Leenane on Killary Harbour. Enjoy a photo stop at Kylemore Abbey on the shores of Kylemore Lough before continuing to Clifden, the capital of Connemara. We return to Galway via Oughterard and Moycullen stopping to shop for Connemara marble. (B, D)

Day 6 Clonmacnoise & Tullamore (Tuesday)

Saying goodbye to Galway we head back east and cross the central plains of Ireland to Dublin - from the Atlantic Ocean to the Irish Sea. We travel via the market towns of Loughrea, Ballinasloe, Athlone on the River Shannon and Tullamore in the county of Offaly known as ‘the Faithful County’. At Clonmacnois see the remains of an early monastery founded by St. Ciaran and then visit the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre located on the banks of the Grand Canal. The centre relates the story of Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey, Irish Mist Liqueur and the development of the town from the early 1600’s. (B, D)

Day 7 Dublin's 'Fair City' (Wednesday)

The full day is yours to explore Dublin’s ‘Fair City’, an ancient and cosmopolitan city as intimate as a village, and friendly as a pub. A Dublin Bus Hop on / Hop off ticket is an ideal way to get around. Alternatively you can take the time to do some shopping around fashionable Grafton Street or visit some of the city’s museums. (B)

Day 8 Wicklow & Kilkenny (Thursday)

Leaving Dublin we travel south along Dublin Bay via Dun Laoghaire into the Wicklow Mountains and visit Glendalough (valley of the two lakes), site of a 6th century monastic settlement founded by St. Kevin. We continue across the mountains to Kilkenny, Ireland’s premier medieval city. Though only a town in size, it has the status of a city having vied with Dublin for the position of capital in the 17th century. (B, D)

Day 9 Midleton & Cobh (Friday)

Enroute to Cork this morning we pass thru’ the coastal towns of Dungarvan and Youghal and view the largest pot still in the world on a tour of the Old Midleton Distillery. Then to nearby Cobh, formerly known as Queenstown, which was the last port of call of the ill-fated Titanic as well as several millions of Irish emigrants heading for a better life in Canada and the USA. Cobh’s historic and maritime story is brought alive in the splendid Interpretive Centre.

Day 10 West Cork & Lakes of Killarney (Saturday)

We follow the River Lee this morning to its source at Gougane Barra Lake. Then it’s over the Shehy Mountains to sub-tropical Glengarriff on Bantry Bay and through Turner’s Rock Tunnel to Kenmare. We continue to Killarney on the Ring of Kerry road to Killarney National Park and visit the Traditional Farms which preserve the farming traditions of rural Ireland in the past. An option to the National Folk Theatre (Siamsa Tire) is on offer tonight. (B, D)

Day 11 Dingle Peninsula (Sunday)

We stop at Blennerville, the port from which thousands of Kerry people emigrated during the 19th century famine and visit the Windmill Visitor Centre for an audio-visual on Blennerville’s colourful history. Afterwards a tour around the Dingle Peninsula, an area rich in antiquities ranging from Iron Age stone forts to beehive huts. We will visit the thriving fishing port of Dingle, view the Blasket Islands as we round Slea Head and walk Inch beach where scenes from the epic film ‘Ryan’s Daughter’ were shot. (B, D)

Day 12 Cliffs of Moher & Burren (Monday)

This morning we cross the Shannon Estuary by ferry and enter to county of Clare where our destinations are the Cliffs of Moher, which stretch for over 5 miles between Hag’s Head and O’Brien’s Tower and the vast limestone plateau in northwest Clare known as The Burren. It was once described as ‘a savage land, yielding neither water enough to drown a man, nor a tree to hang him, nor soil enough to bury’. This evening join the Earl of Thomond for a glorious Medieval Banquet in a 15th century castle. (B, D)

Day 13 Tour Ends (Tuesday)

Your tour ends after a final hearty Irish breakfast in your hotel. A transfer will be provided to Shannon Airport for those returning home today or to Dublin for those extending their stay. (B)
